Volcanic Hazards
Volcano Learning Zone > Volcanic Hazards>
Volcanic Hazards include pyroclastic flows, lahars, lava flows, tsunami, ash clouds and earthquakes and can be dramatic, deadly and rapid. Volcanoes cannot be prevented from erupting so ways must be found to lessen the risk and impact of the hazard. Lava flows are dramatic but rarely endanger life alternatively pyroclastic flows and lahars can devastating to local populations.
Volcanologists aim to study and monitor volcanic activity and assess the likelyhood of an eruption. Pinning the volcano to a particular date and time is unrealistic 99% of the time but some progress has been made and general predictions have saved lifes. In contrast to earthquakes, which are still elusive, volcanoes give off clues to their likelyhood of eruption. These clues can save lives if acted upon.
