Growing up in rural Norfolk England gave me a love of the outdoors. Although there are no mountains, the highest point is 100m, there is a awful lot of countryside and a long coastline. So cycling, playing by the river, sailing and wandering along the seashore were the main outdoor distractions. I loved picking up stones on the beach ,especially the unusual ones, some even came from Norway carried by icesheets. The cliffs had wild swirly shapes of sand and clay which collapsed regularlyl. On the beach you coud pick up fossils from the cretaceous millions of years before. I even found jet once.

In the 70s TV was very limited but I would watch westerns, Disney nature programmes anything with landscpaes in.The landscapes looked amazing- The wild big west of North America. Then in 1980 Mt St Helens erupted and it was amazing. I was transfixed by this massive natural event.

To cut along story short I ended up doing a degree in Geology/Geography then two years in the oil industry and a MSc in Remote Sensing. I did 10 years in teaching, and this did give me the chance to travel and visit all those fantastic places i d heard about. Yellowstone,Banff,Grand Canyon,Yosemite- the list goes on. I even witnessed an eruption on Mt Etna, watched lava flow into the sea in Hawaii and escaped grizzlies in Alaska. Eventually I settled down and after leaving teaching to have a family. I needed someting to occupy my hungry brain. So I taught myself webpage design and started explorevolcanoes.com and adventure-travel-hut.co.uk. They are both written and researched by me from scratch - no cut and paste here. I m still learning the web stuff and love it so Ii apologise for the odd blip. I hope the pages will encourage you to spread your wings. There is other stuff but thats enough for now.
